A saree is not
a costume.

It is the most worn garment in the country and the least understood outside it. We work with weaving families in Kanchipuram, Varanasi and Chanderi, buy at prices they set, and photograph the cloth as it actually falls.

Six yards,
no zip.

A saree has no seams, no fastenings and no size. It is one uncut length of cloth that fits a body at twenty and the same body at fifty. Nothing else in a wardrobe does that.

The weave is where the value sits. A Kanjivaram body and border are woven separately and joined by hand, which is why the join survives being folded for a decade.
